Twitter announced today New Replies Settings. The new setting will let you tweak how you want to handle @ replies. You have 3 options: All Replies, Replies from people I’m following and None. The best one here is All Replies. There have been many times when I’m following someone and want to @ reply to them but I know they won’t see it because in the past they only got messages from those they follow. This way if someone is directing a message at you, even if you don’t follow them, you can choose to see those messages. Very nice update guys.

Actually,

You see updates posted @ you no matter what your settings, this is just a setting for viewing your friends messages. @replies are only counted as replies if “@” is the first character of the tweet.

all @replies will show you every tweet your friends send, even if it’s to people you don’t follow.

@replies to people you follow will show you when one person you’re following replies to another person you’re following

no @ replies will filter out all friends @replies

regardless of your settings, @replies directed at you will always show up in the replies tab on your twitter.com home screen.

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t always that way, because we tried it. @ messages evolved out of usage and weren’t even hyperlinked. If you did @username, if the person wasn’t following you, you didn’t see it. This may have changed, which is great, but it also opens things up for spamming. If it’s true that this is now the case, meaning if I posted @somerandomuser and they will see the message, I can now spam ANYONE on twitter I want. I just tested it, and you’re right. Replies hasn’t always been there, so this is still new. On the one hand this is great because I can reply to people who don’t follow me. I just have to hope they check their replies tab. By the skeptic in me is already thinking of ways to exploit this ;)

Thanks for the heads up! I’ll have to post about this.
