Carol has posted the best Twitter Guide that I’ve seen so far. If you are trying to introduce Twitter to friends or family, send them to Carol’s guide. It’s excellent. She took the time to really break things out into logical topics and even uses copious pictures to illustrate what’s happening.

Writer’s Write is covering the Writers’ Strike via Twitter. These are the same folks who publish Bloggers Blog and have been doing a great job of using Twitter to communicate with members and I imagine gain new readers. I love the idea of using Twitter to follow a story. This is not as “important” socially as the California Wildfires story but the impact it could have on Hollywood may end up costing more than 500 Million dollars! Not to mention a lot of people starved for entertainment, which could mean more people turning to the Internets for a bit. Though shows will likely continue well into Feb sweeps before we really start seeing the effects of the strike.

TwitterPoster is a clever visual mashup that shows you a virtual “poster” of who has more influence on Twitter. This is a pretty useful tool from a marketing perspective: now I know exactly which Twitter users to focus on making my friends ;) You can also view posters for specific countries like USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, China etc.

Oliver Gassner posts 10 things to do when you start using twitter.com and it’s sound advice for those new to Twitter. Obviously once you dig in and get into it there are all sorts of nuances to playing the social networking game, but Oliver’s post is a good place to start!

According to this Forrester Report they do. Not likely. Research Recap does an excellent job of looking at the number, along with quotes from Robert Scoble. What the report actually means to say is 6% of the sample group they asked about using Twitter said they use it monthly. This is a common survey method and is a problem with all sorts of “sampling” and non more evidendent than in TV ratings. According to Scoble Twitter gets between 50,000 and 300,000 monthly users, which sounds about right.

TwitterWhere is a very clever way to follow tweets by location. People like to call it “follow twitter anywhere”, but I can already do that. What they mean is follow tweets from a certain geographical location. You can enter in your zip and a range (in miles) to follow. This is a very cool way to follow what’s going on right where you are. It’s kind of neat to follow the tweets from my home town but I could see this being very useful if you were out of town and looking for something to get into. Very nice.

Great story on a very good use for Twitter. Twitter members are able send updates from the area real time, as well as other news outlets etc. Followers can then track the story and get updates nearly instantly! Very clever use of the Twitter service! This is a perfect example of how a broadcast system that makes it easy to push one message to many users can be truly useful.

Robert Scoble and Dave Winer are asking for a “Twitter Pro” that they could pay $10 a month for to remove the 140 character limit.

Actually, I call it Pownce and it’s better than Twitter in almost every way, save for adoption. It’s a serious threat to Twitter with it’s slick design, extra features and lack of a character limit. It’s getting more and more forum like, not blog like. With the ability to reply and reply to replies, threading, community (friends, etc.) it’s more like a forum than a blog. And Pownce has all that in spaded. The only thing Twitter has that Pownce doesn’t is more users and the SMS feature, which still has a character limit anyway making the $10 to remove the limit a moot point.

TTYtter for Perl looks like a very promising command line client for interacting with Twitter. Unlike previous CLI clients, this one is interactive and sends / receives tweets in real time. But the feature I look forward to with this client is the built in API to create your own Twitter bots. I’ve had a few ideas of my own for Twitter bots and this could seriously speed up development. Well worth checking out!
