Twitter Client: Twitterer

posted in Twitter Clients, Windows on 04/13/07 at 04:04 PM

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

When I first started with Twitter I couldn’t find a Twitter client. Now it’s hard to go a day without finding one! The latest is Twitterer and uses the Microsoft .NET framework like most of the other windows clients.

Thanks to Pete for sending in the tip!

New version of Twitbox is ready for download. From WinExtra’s site:

# Twitter User Search - I have added the ability to search for the last 20 tweets made by a user. Just supply their screen name and away you go. You can also use this feature when either of the timelines are being viewed by selecting the user in the list and using the keyboard shortcut Alt + S
# You can now turn off the Public Timeline updating using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-P. This shortcut will toggle it on or off. You can also do this by double clicking the Public Timeline refresh status area of the statusbar
# You can select the fonts used for the top Info panel and also the tweet text entry area
# You can set the font color used for URL links; if available, in the top Info panel
# Added a url link to the TwitBox home (here) in the statusbar area

Looking forward to the history function, that’ll be handy.

Head on over to WinExtra to download

FeedBlitz is a service that lets you send blog and rss feeds to email. It’s a great way to keep your users up to date without the headache of managing the software yourself. They’ve now added
updates via Twitter as an option to premium subscribers. The new feature lets people subscribe to your updates via Twitter.

Three Reasons Why Twitter Will Be Sold Soon

posted in OpEd on 04/10/07 at 08:04 PM

Steve Rubel lists Three Reasons Why Twitter Will Be Sold Soon and I think he’s on the right track. I have a feeling that the plan was always to sell it and that was how they plan to monetize it. We’ll see, of course, but I think a sale is very, very likely. Especially now that Twitter has mass.

Twitter Mashup - Twitterverse

posted in Mashups & APIs, Web on 04/10/07 at 07:04 PM

Twitterverse is a mashup that basically archives all your tweets. Everyone’s tweets. It organizes them by tags and time and even lets you search.

I’m not sure this qualifies as a mashup though, it’s just archive of tweets that you can search and browse, which is novel enough, but not really a mashup. Unless you count php+mysql+content a mashup ;) Still a cool Twitter related site though!

Twitter Vulnerable to Spoofing?

posted in In The News on 04/09/07 at 10:04 AM

Can someone pose as you on Twitter? With a very simple trick, yes they can.

Both Twitter and Jott authenticate users by their phone number. Twitter does this by validating users based upon the source of SMS messages sent to the phone number 40404 (US), and Jott does this by trusting the incoming Caller ID when someone calls 877-568-848. From a security perspective this means the following:

* Anyone who knows your phone number can update your Twitter page by spoofing a SMS message, i.e. post a Twitter entry as you.
* Anyone who knows your phone number can spoof his or her caller ID to send a Jott message as you.

Read Twitter and Jott Vulnerable to SMS and Caller ID Spoofing by Nitesh Dhanjani for the full details. Needless to say I hope they are able to fix this. I don’t know much about the SMS world but hopefully they’ll be able to block these fake sender services. The problem is new ones will fill up all the time. Does this mean Twitter and similar services need another layer of authentication? I know a lot of people on Twitter publish their cell phone numbers on their web sites so this could get ugly kinda quick like.

Leo Laporte Leaves Twitter for Jaiku

posted in OpEd on 04/08/07 at 08:04 PM

Leo Laporte is a bleeding edge technology kind of guy. He’s what marketing monkeys call an “influencer”. He certainly has gravity as a tech/internet celebrity. There is no doubt he’s had a major impact on the massive jump in Twitter popularity in the last 6-8 weeks. Evan even acknowledges this in his recent interview with Jason Calacanis. Now Leo is leaving Twitter for Jaiku a competing service to Twitter.

Leo says the reason for the move is confusing with the name Twitter. Leo’s new project, one that started before Twitter, is called TWiT.tv, or This Week in Tech. They do several podcasts and video casts. I’m willing to bet that this is the real and honest reason for leaving Twitter and I don’t claim to know Leo’s audience as well as he does but it seems like the tech savvy viewers of Leo’s work would obviously (pun intended) know the difference. Branding is a concern for any company and this will be an interesting story to follow. Leo has asked Evan for his account on Twitter to be deleted, which is a shame. Leo is the most “followed” person on Twitter right now with 4,420, nearly double Robert Scoble who is also a huge driving force in terms of sending folks over to Twitter. Leo only has 57 people on Jaiku at the time of this writing. The interesting thing will be to see if Leo has enough mass to pull users away from the gravity he and others have created around Twitter.

You can check out Leo’s page on Jaiku at chieftwit.jaiku.com.

Twitter Bots!

posted in Twitter Bots on 04/08/07 at 08:04 PM

As people suggested with the recent API change would be the introduction of Twitterbots that give you the ability to tweet a user and get back an automated reply. The result being things like stocks, weather, sports. I got a message the other day on Twitter from the first of these that I know of from Techquila Shots.

They are offering Forecasts, Stocks and Sports Scores (down the individual teams). Pretty slick.

Twitter as a blood sport

posted in OpEd on 04/06/07 at 12:04 PM

Best Twitter line ever:

I find this quite humorous and can only hope it was intentional. If you want to delete a Twitter friend (I haven’t and don’t) the URL is http://twitter.com/friendships/destroy/PoorSapHere. I like it. Social networking as blood sport. Kudos to Twitter. via Destroying Twitter Friendships

I was only going to quote the funny part but then I’d be leaving off like 8 words from the post and that’s just as bad.
