Due to the high cost of sending and receiving text messages (SMS) in Australia Twitter has decided to turn off the service in the land down under. The service outage seems to be a temporary situation with hopes to resolve it soon. Our friends in the outback can still use Twitter via the web and other clients, just not on their phones. Hopefully they’ll be back with us soon.

According to the Twitteresce web site:

Twitteresce allows you to access your twitter feed using your mobile phone. All you need is a twitter account, a Java J2ME enabled mobile!

That could be a very useful way of keeping up with tweets without having to get a ton of text messages. While this is pull technology rather than push it could end up saving you some money. Check out Twitteresce

Twitterment answers the question: What are we twittering? This could come in handy if you are looking for liked minded folks to connect with. Probably one of my favorite uses of the Twitter api so far.

Twitter is being assimilated into other social networks extremely quickly - not only did Facebook just upgrade its status updates to do much the same thing, but now Bebo has launched a feature that also emulates Twitter’s functionality. I like the addition of the feature. It’s not novel by any means, Twitter copied the idea from Dodgeball. It may be a passing fad, but small is the new big at the moment. The copy of the input box, however, is a little bit too much of a copy. I like it, it looks great, of course. I wonder how many others will be adding this type thing into their own social sites. I probably will!

For anyone unfamiliar with the latest trends in technology, “Twitterers� send and receive short messages, called “tweets,� on Twitter’s Web site, with instant messaging software, or with mobile phones. Unlike most text messages, tweets — usually in answer to Twitter’s prompt, “What are you doing?� — are routed among networks of friends. Simon over at Advertising Age wrote Web 2.0? Not So Fast — Say Hello to Web 1.9 (If That) and mainly extols the reasons why Twitter isn’t an example of Web 2.0. I’m not a huge fan of all the crazy labels and hype around stuff. Hell, I’m still one of the people who like to call blogs “web pages”, you know, like we used to.

Like any form of communication (chat, email, cell phones, etc.) you are going to get the noise with the signal. You think the banter of teenage girls on their cellphones is worthy of the powerful technology that the cell phone represents? Or me calling my wife asking “what do you think we should do for dinner”. Every tool will have it’s good uses and it’s bad uses. It’s not the tools fault.

Lucas (thanks for the tip!) wrote a nice little hack that will let you play MP3s right inside twitter. This is a pretty cool idea and I could see it being extended to video clips too. Very nice hack. Check out playTwitter for all the details.

Twittermail looks like a pretty cool project getting started by an OpenIdea. The basic idea is to use MailTwitterPHP, which is a email to Twitter gateway. Looks like this could be a pretty cool project, I’ll be keeping tabs on it.

Update: Reading the comments of the OpenIdea I found mail2twitter which seems to be up and running already. Worth taking a look at if you want to email your Twitter updates — hint, those of you behind firewalls!
