If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I’m sure you’ve seen me talk about wanting a client that manages most of my social network. Most of them have APIs, so why not? Finally, someone’s put together an IM style client that notifies you of updates, lets you manage friends, media, links, feeds… the whole ball of wax. Here is a video tour straight from 8hands, check this out:

This is extremely cool. I’m installing it now

twhirl.jpg twhirl is the latest Twitter Client I’ve come across using the Adobe AIR package. AIR makes it possible to run the same code on both Windows and Mac (others?) which I like. I hate finding some cool app and it only be for one system. As a developer, I use Windows, Linux and a Mac and I like finding tools that work on all three systems, which is rare. Adobe’s AIR is a step in the right direction.

twhirl looks like it’s off to a solid start. Just check out these features:

  • runs on both Windows (XP/Vista) and Mac OSX
  • automatically fetches your friends’ status updates, as well as replies and direct messages for you, into an all-in-one timeline
  • color-coding different types of messages
  • connecting to multiple Twitter accounts
  • keyboard shortcuts
  • sys tray / dock icon support
  • visual and audible notifications on new tweets, configurable and with preview
  • view, add and remove favorites
  • shorten long URLs (using snurl.com)
  • (un)follow users from twhirl
  • automatically checking for twhirl updates
  • changeable color schemes
  • NEW: retweet a received tweet
  • NEW: search public tweets (powered by terraminds)
  • NEW: timeline filtering

Looks well worth giving a shot. I’m still looking forward to a client like this that supports Pownce and all the others that have API’s. This way I can post to all my microblogging hot spots at once.

Linux users, specifically those using the Gnome desktop have another option for a Twitter Clienter: Twitux. The software seems to have the usual Twitter features and looks clean and solid. Any linux users tried it yet? What do you think? I’ll try to get it setup on my dev box and try it out.

Most of my friends spend work on the Internet and always have their email open. Most of them are also what I would call “power” users and want to load only as many apps as necessary to save precious system resources. Since they are already in email, being able to send and receive tweets via email would be pretty slick indeed. OutTwit offers that ability to people who use Microsoft Outlook. The screenshots look great and I like the idea of organizing tweets using an email client. It’s something people are used to doing already anyway. The only complaint I’ve seen is for people who follow a ton of folks. They end up with a ton of extra emails! I’m sure a few settings tweeks and a rule/filter should reduce the clutter. Looks like a pretty solid twitter client.

I’ve been seeing TwitterBerry pop up in Twitter messages a lot lately but it didn’t really click that it was a new client for the Blackberry until Nicki brought it to my attention today. Twitter is addictive. The Blackberry has often been called the CrackBerry. Can you make a Blackberry more addictive?

I’m just jealous there isn’t a Twitter app for my Sidekick!

TTYtter for Perl looks like a very promising command line client for interacting with Twitter. Unlike previous CLI clients, this one is interactive and sends / receives tweets in real time. But the feature I look forward to with this client is the built in API to create your own Twitter bots. I’ve had a few ideas of my own for Twitter bots and this could seriously speed up development. Well worth checking out!

Digital Streets reports that OutTwit will let you update Twitter from Microsoft Outlook 2003 or 2007. While I like the idea of being able to Twitter from every application, I’m not sure we actually need that level of access to Twitter. However, for those who live in their email clients, I can see the benefit.

Snitter is the latest Twitter client to hit the “scene” and this one is using Adobe’s AIR, which I’m getting more and more interested in working with. The Pownce client I use was written in AIR. The client looks solid and could be a pretty good alternative to some of the other apps out there.

Twitbox Looking for Feedback

posted in Twitter Clients on 08/19/07 at 08:08 PM

The main reason I am asking for your input is one of the more requested things is the ability to access more than one Twitter account should you have such a setup. In order to do this I will be having to do a bit of a major re-write of parts of the program so I figured this would be a good time to get you all to chip in with your ideas - after all it is you that is using the program :).

Head over to WinExtra’s Site and let Steven know what you want from the TwitBox client. Now is your chance to help shape the future of the tool.

PocketTweets for the iPhone

posted in Twitter Clients, iPhone on 07/09/07 at 06:07 PM

PocketTweets is another new Web site that is optimized for the iPhone browser and makes use of the Twitter API so you can send and receive tweets via your iPhone. This one looks really good too.
