MoodBlast for Mac OS X

posted in Mac, Twitter Tools on 01/25/08 at 12:01 PM

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

moodblast.jpg MoodBlast is a cool little menu bar app that lets you “blast” your “mood”, or, just a quick blurb, update, link, whatever, to most of the popular social and microblogging platforms including facebook, skype, ichat, jaiku, twitter, and more.

I like the idea of being able to send my updates to all my favorite places and having a light weight app to do that with is even better. Most of the apps that try this tend to try to do to much. This one is perfect for quickly “blasting” an update.

twhirl.jpg twhirl is the latest Twitter Client I’ve come across using the Adobe AIR package. AIR makes it possible to run the same code on both Windows and Mac (others?) which I like. I hate finding some cool app and it only be for one system. As a developer, I use Windows, Linux and a Mac and I like finding tools that work on all three systems, which is rare. Adobe’s AIR is a step in the right direction.

twhirl looks like it’s off to a solid start. Just check out these features:

  • runs on both Windows (XP/Vista) and Mac OSX
  • automatically fetches your friends’ status updates, as well as replies and direct messages for you, into an all-in-one timeline
  • color-coding different types of messages
  • connecting to multiple Twitter accounts
  • keyboard shortcuts
  • sys tray / dock icon support
  • visual and audible notifications on new tweets, configurable and with preview
  • view, add and remove favorites
  • shorten long URLs (using snurl.com)
  • (un)follow users from twhirl
  • automatically checking for twhirl updates
  • changeable color schemes
  • NEW: retweet a received tweet
  • NEW: search public tweets (powered by terraminds)
  • NEW: timeline filtering

Looks well worth giving a shot. I’m still looking forward to a client like this that supports Pownce and all the others that have API’s. This way I can post to all my microblogging hot spots at once.

twitterstats.jpg Twitter has been described as “micro blogging” for some time now, and blogging has always felt a bit like navel gazing to me. So by that logic Twitter would be Micro Navel Gazing (TM). Enter Twitter Stats, The Atomic Navel Gazer!

All joking aside, Twitter Stats looks pretty slick. It’s written perl, which is the only complaint I have about it. Don’t get me wrong, perl is a great language, I just don’t like it! Twitter Stats should run on any system that supports perl and the modules required for this script. It looks like it was developed on a Mac, but any nix computer and probably windows with perl on it should work. Damon (the author) suggested a web create a web service out of this, which I think is a great idea. So much so, I checked to see if TwitterStats.com was available and it’s already registered. Hopefully to Damon, but the whois info is private so it’s hard to say.

TTYtter for Perl looks like a very promising command line client for interacting with Twitter. Unlike previous CLI clients, this one is interactive and sends / receives tweets in real time. But the feature I look forward to with this client is the built in API to create your own Twitter bots. I’ve had a few ideas of my own for Twitter bots and this could seriously speed up development. Well worth checking out!

Pwytter is a multi-platform Twitter Client written in Python and tklnter. It’s still early, but looks like it’s off to a great start. I like the idea of anything written in a language like Python because it’s what I do for a living ;)

Cool little dashboard widget that shows the latest tunes from last.fm and even send those tracks to twitter. Since I like last.fm and twitter and the mac this is like the triple threat. Nice. Grab last.tweet and have fun.

Found another Mac OS X Twitter Client, Twitteromatic while searching for news. I’ll post a review once I’ve had a chance to give this a go. [via]

The public beta for Twitterific 2.0 is out and looks like it has some pretty nice new features. Among my favorites: Read and Unread, favorites, spelling!, respond to author, direct messages and a few others. This is by far my favorite Twitter tool, aside from Twitter, of course.

Read the full details at MacMegaSite or snag the download from IconFactory.

After reading the Twitter with TextMate post over at Muffin Research Labs I decided to check out the blog. I’m always looking for good dev blogs and found another entry on Twitter that might be of interest to the more hardcore among us. I’m too lazy to be this hard core but I still think it’s pretty cool. Muffin has some slick python scripts for sending twitters via command line, if you are so inclined.

Twitter from TextMate

posted in Mac, Twitter Tools on 03/25/07 at 07:03 PM

All you mac geeks out there, including myself, who live inside TextMate might find this handy, or kind of overkill. Still, I like the novelty of the idea: being able to send twitter messages from TextMate. I guess I kind of like the idea of being able to send tweets from anywhere and everywhere! Hit Muffin Research Labs for the details and download.
