Auto Follow Followers

posted in Hacks, Mashups & APIs, Web on 11/14/07 at 03:11 PM

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Try to say that 3 times fast. Jesse has released a perl script that will let you auto-follow anyone who’s following you on Twitter. Pretty cool little tool. Seems there are more than a few requests to have Twitter automatically do this. Go grab the script.

Gtalk Twitter Hack

posted in Hacks on 11/08/07 at 02:11 PM

For all of you productivity people out there, like myself, you’ll like this hack.

Renjus posts Creating and receiving event reminders in Google Talk through twitter which is very easy way to setup reminders on the go. Since I have a Sidekick, I like the idea of using SMS and Twitter to update things like to do lists, calendars and reminders so this is right up my ally.

MoodSwing and MoodBlast

posted in Firefox, Hacks, Quicksilver on 08/19/07 at 08:08 PM

With the idea from my last post, I did some searching and found MoodSwing and MoodBlast, which is Quicksilver plugin that aims to let you update your status on quite a few of the major “social” type sites. The focus is on pretty much any of those sites that have a working API, so for now things like MSN and Pownce are not on the agenda. Hopefully Pownce will get around to releasing an API and considering that even Digg has an API Pownce cant’ be far behind. MoodSwing and Moodblast are pretty new but show a lot of potential.

Great little hack: Publish your Facebook status on Twitter.

It makes me think that we need some sort of global format for this kind of thing, some new protocol for these kinds of sites that lets us use an xml-rpc typer interface that we can send updates to all the sites are are plugged into. Each site (facebook, twitter, myspace, linkedin, etc.) could support any or all of the “hooks” they wanted. For example, they could all support the “status” hook and you could post your status via your blog or web client and then it would ping all the services you’ve configured and update your stats. Maybe I should be working on such a concept instead of giving it away here ;)

Thanks to Nicki for the tip!

Now you can manage your tasks using the Remember the Milk todo webapp via the Twitter micro-blogging service. Huh-wha? In a nutshell, Remember the Milk turns Twitter’s question - “What are you doing?” to “What should you be doing?” via lifehacker

Okay, this is hands down the coolest bot for Twitter yet. A quick and easy reminder system. I like sending myself notes from my phone (or iPhone now!), but nothing forces me to see them in the morning, or when I need to. Now I can twitter myself. Wait, that didn’t sound right. Needless to say, I’ll be using this bot quite a bit.

Very big thanks to Nicki!

Lucas (thanks for the tip!) wrote a nice little hack that will let you play MP3s right inside twitter. This is a pretty cool idea and I could see it being extended to video clips too. Very nice hack. Check out playTwitter for all the details.

Send Tweets via Email with Twittermail

posted in Email, Hacks, PHP, Web on 04/13/07 at 04:04 PM

Twittermail looks like a pretty cool project getting started by an OpenIdea. The basic idea is to use MailTwitterPHP, which is a email to Twitter gateway. Looks like this could be a pretty cool project, I’ll be keeping tabs on it.

Thanks to Nicki for the tip!

Update: Reading the comments of the OpenIdea I found mail2twitter which seems to be up and running already. Worth taking a look at if you want to email your Twitter updates — hint, those of you behind firewalls!

TwitterFeed

posted in Hacks, Web on 04/05/07 at 07:04 PM

Want to automagically post your blog posts to twitter? TwitterFeed is a free service that’ll let you do just that. Supports any RSS or ATOM feed. I can think of a few uses for this right off the bat. Could really cut down on having to update multiple places. Though Wordpress does have a plugin that goes both ways (Twitter <-> Blog).

Hack: Getting Around The Twitter Tax

posted in Hacks on 04/03/07 at 02:04 PM

Muhammad posts a little How to Avoid the ‘Twitter Tax’. I like the term: Twitter Tax. Nice. I suggested in the comments that you can also get an unlimited text message plan for about the same price, which should also avoid the “Twitter Tax”.

Binny over at Bin Blog has a nice little hack for sending tweets via command line. Anyone running a fairly standard *nix or LAMP setup should have everything you need to do this. Binny is also looking at using Twitter as a time tracking tool and has a nice way to Twitter Offline, or more like store your tweets locally. It’s giving me some ideas! Personally, I want to setup a private twitter account to use as a “note to self” because it’s just so easy to send my notes to. I send myself email notes all the time and if I had one place to “not to self” that was this easy I’d be very happy.
