The Desktop On The Extinction List?

The Apple Blog writes an eye opening piece on the Decline of the Desktop Mac and while spot on, I think this is true of more than just Apple. I’m seeing more and more people switch to using just a laptop. It just makes more sense. The price is right, the specs are close to their desktop brothers and sisters and you don’t have to “sync” up between several machines. Oh, and it’s mobile.

I think there will always be a market for desktops. I don’t see many businesses switching to all laptops and losing control over their assets, digital and physical. There are also higher end consumers who will need more power than the current laptop market offers: Video Editors, Musicians, serious photo manipulations, large calculations and compiling large code are just some of the things that can make use of the extra power a desktop brings. Must laptops today are thousands of times faster than the thousands of the some of the first desktops combined. The mobile era has most certainly arrived.
