1. you’ve followed a large number of people in a short amount of time
2. there is a small number of followers compared to number of people you’re following
3. the updates consist mainly of links and not personal updates
4. a large number of users blocking the profile and writing in with spam complaints
Read the rest via Chris Garrett. I think he’s right in suggesting that #4 is the real kicker here. Almost everyone does most of these from time time and as Chris mentions many of the people he follows post copious amounts of links including some pretty big blogs who use Twitter to promote their blog/posts. More than a handful of people I follow do the same.
One thing I’d add to the thought process is the context of the messages and links. If they are obviously trying to sell a product or service, especially those considered spam (viagra, make money schemes, drugs, porn, etc.) your more likely to get banned. I think it’s a combination of the content and #3 and #4.

TinyURL is down, or rather the url redirection has been. TinURL lets you shorten urls and many Twitter users make use of the service so they can post links and still keep their message under 140 chars. Tweetl is an alternative url shortening service aimed at Twitter users and naturally there is no shortage of alternatives. I own 3 or 4 domains that I plan on offering such services on myself! Need to get them bad boys setup!

Interesting Twitter feed to follow: Black Friday from Shopper’s Shop.
I know I’ve mentioned ioubeer but I never linked to it. Check out one of the cooler Twitter Bots Foamee. A bot’s a bot but Simplebits brings it’s design style to it and creates something that’s just fun.

Just a quick update: I’ve updated the theme here on Twitter Hacks so for those of you who visit the site you might want to refresh. The layout is based on the template I did for my personal blog (Chrispian.com) and will probably need some tweaking here and there.
Make your feelings known with plusplusbot. You can ++ (pronounced “plusplus”) or — (”minusminus”) anything. Think brownie points (but archived forever). Here’s how it works:1. Make sure you have a Twitter account
2. Follow plusplusbot
3. If you love something add ++ after it like this:coffee++ because it keeps me alert
You’ll get a confirmation message with coffee’s current score, and plusplusbot.com will update itself. (To indicate your displeasure, use — after a target name.)
Another cool Twitter bot indeed. Soon they’ll need to update the character limit just so I can ioubeer++ @someone +twnote an on an on ;)

Here’s another cool twitter-er to follow from the Writer’s Write adn Bloggers Blog folks: Blog Tips. They really know how to work the whole Twitter angle.
Try to say that 3 times fast. Jesse has released a perl script that will let you auto-follow anyone who’s following you on Twitter. Pretty cool little tool. Seems there are more than a few requests to have Twitter automatically do this. Go grab the script.
