Twitter Lands Funding

posted in Uncategorized on 07/29/07 at 08:07 PM

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Twitter has landed funding from Union Square Ventures. In the short term, I hope that means a few new servers and better uptime (thought it’s been better lately). I can’t predict where Twitter is heading, but I suspect with competitors like Pownce and Jaiku springing up that they’ll probably be adding a few features. It’s kind of ironic though because the idea for Twitter itself was just one simple feature from Dodgeball and now most of these “twitter” clones are becoming more like the app that inspired them. The internets do love some irony.

WordTwit Wordpress Plugin

posted in Mashups & APIs, Wordpress on 07/29/07 at 08:07 PM

WordTwit looks like a pretty good plugin for WordPress. It takes new blog posts and sends them to your twitter account. For those people using Twitter to expand their blogs reach this could be a great tool to make that even easier.

TwitterCal

posted in Mashups & APIs, Twitter Bots, Twitter Tools, Web on 07/29/07 at 08:07 PM

I think Nicki said it best:

Twitter, meet Google Calendar … Google Calendar, meet Twitter

TwitterCal, if it isn’t already obvious, lets you use Google Calendar via Twitter. Pretty soon I won’t even have to leave Twitter anymore. Not that I do, which I guess is a pretty sad statement itself ;)

Now you can manage your tasks using the Remember the Milk todo webapp via the Twitter micro-blogging service. Huh-wha? In a nutshell, Remember the Milk turns Twitter’s question - “What are you doing?” to “What should you be doing?” via lifehacker

Okay, this is hands down the coolest bot for Twitter yet. A quick and easy reminder system. I like sending myself notes from my phone (or iPhone now!), but nothing forces me to see them in the morning, or when I need to. Now I can twitter myself. Wait, that didn’t sound right. Needless to say, I’ll be using this bot quite a bit.

Very big thanks to Nicki!

Pownce vs. Twitter

posted in Pownce on 07/09/07 at 06:07 PM

Pownce is the latest competitor to Twitter and is brought to you by Kevin Rose of Digg fame. If anyone has a shot at taking on Twitter it’s Kevin. With the obvious advantage of the Digg user base and Kevin’s own “internet fame” it should be a lock. But more than that, Pownce is pretty slick. They don’t bother with the SMS (yet, maybe later?) and stick with web and mac/windows clients. You can send messages, files, links and events. As with Twitter you can add or follow friends, but Pownce as the ability to create friend groups. Right now it’s invite only (pownce invites here) and, if the server response lately is any indicator, it’s getting very popular.

I suspect, and I’m just speculating, that pownce could be a back door attempt and producing the next MySpace or Facebook. With just a handful more features Pownce would be just that. It’s not far from it now.

At any rate, I like Pownce, epically the “reply” button on messages. I look forward to seeing where this thing goes.

There is a little hack that Jetpacked brought into the light that makes it possible with TwitterFeed. Normally, Twitterfeed would be used to feed your blog into Twitter, but by creating a link to your Pownce accounts RSS instead of your blog, posting in one place makes it possible to post in two at the same time. You can start things off by using your OpenID to log into Twitterfeed.com, then entering your Twitter credentials, and using your Pownce feed (http://www.pownce.com/feeds/public/USERNAME) as the RSS Feed URL, and set the frequency rate. via download squad

Great idea. The only draw back I can think of is that Pownce doesn’t seem to have a character limit and Twitter does. Still, this is a pretty cool idea. The next mashup should do Twitter + Jaiku + Pownce. Maybe all these should just use Jabbr or something like that.

PocketTweets for the iPhone

posted in Twitter Clients, iPhone on 07/09/07 at 06:07 PM

PocketTweets is another new Web site that is optimized for the iPhone browser and makes use of the Twitter API so you can send and receive tweets via your iPhone. This one looks really good too.

Pwytter is a multi-platform Twitter Client written in Python and tklnter. It’s still early, but looks like it’s off to a great start. I like the idea of anything written in a language like Python because it’s what I do for a living ;)
